Ninnntennndooo DS! [31 May 2005|12:59pm]
[ mood | contemplative ]
[ music | Rolling Stones - Wild Horses ]

Putting the misery of the last few days behind me, I went out yesterday and bought a Nintendo DS. Cost me £120 along with Super Mario DS and a starter kit thing. Gamestation honestly have the best deals, I've bought a Gamecube, an Xbox, a DS and loads of games from there. Check it out if you pass one, I prefer it to Game although it doesn't have a great range of choices.

Anyway, back to my ramble about the DS. It is a very cool piece of kit, and the graphics are ten times better than what I had originally thought. They are supposed to be N64 graphics being 64 bit and all, but I think it has gone that little bit further. The start up screen gives you multiple options; you have a clock, a calender and the option of connecting to your friends, download content and even chat to them with pictures. I really can't wait to play someone over wireless, it would be such an experience.

The DS itself is a little bulky I have to admit, but it is also quite diverse. The lid is magnetic so there is no little clip that can break disallowing you to shut the console. As you already know there are two screens, one of which is a touch screen. It is very sensitive which is a good thing. There is also a built in mic for some reason, I can imagine that being used to great effect on later games. It has a rechargable battery, so no more having to constantly buy disposable batteries. There's also a back-light on this version, which enchances your ability to actually see what you're doing no end. The console even has a little thingy to put your stylus in, which is cool. Overall it is fairly lightweight, but you would struggle to fit it properly into your pocket.

The first thing I noticed was the sound. It has surround speakers! The quality is very good, it's like having your TV on at low volume. The second thing I noticed is how well the top screen interacts with the bottom screen. In some moments on Super Mario characters pass flawlessly from one screen to the other, it's very clever. The final thing that really stood out to me, apart from the graphics, was the way the games give you the option of using a stylus or using the D-pad. If you are using the D-pad there are chances in the game to use thr stylus, and vice versa. There is a good balance going on there.

I do have a problem with using the stylus though. To start with the buttons you really needs (like a, b, x, y) are on the right, so I can't use my natural hand to hold the stylus. That means I have to hold the console with my right hand, using my thumb to press the buttons, and then hold the stylus in my left, which I'm not so good at. This is quite uncomfortable and I actually got hand cramp the first time I used it. I now resort to just using the D-pad, it's a lot less effort.

I was recommended Super Mario DS by a couple of my friends, they claimed it was the best game out for the DS yet. I have to agree with them on that, it is a very good game. There are many combos you can do as many characters. The gameplay is typical mario, and there are lots of side games to occupy you. There's a feature called the Rec room which you can unlock mini-games in and play them at any time. I love these as much as the actual adventure mode, as they are sooo addictive and fun. My favourite so far is using the stylus to bounce Marios up and direct them to hit these bombs to disactivate them. I'm hooked. It's a very good game, I would recommend it myself.

So that's my little (Ok, not so little) review of the DS so far. I may go back and do some more reviews later on when I discover new games. Ok, possie out.

My commentary on Carol Ann Duffy's 'The World's Wife'. [26 May 2005|03:54pm]
[ mood | indescribable ]
[ music | My painful screams. ]

Before I begin, there's two things you need to know:

1. Carol Ann Duffy is a lesbian and feminist poet who wrote a collection of poems to be studied by A level students.

2. I have an exam on this collection TOMORROW.

*Clears throat*...

My intitial reactions to this pile of wasted paper could easily be defined by three simple letters, 'WTF'. Moreover, after forking out £8.99 for a book one quarter the size of a novel that would usually be priced at £6.99, I can come to the further conclusion that Carol Ann Duffy is a capitalist, greedy monkey lover. I also find it deeply ironic how the majority of the poems in this collection involve some reference to the male sexual organ as the poet is a LESBIAN. She's also ugly, if you didn't already know that. There are a total of 30 poems in this depressingly crap book, each one as painful to read as the next. I will physically BURN this collection when I finish my exam, which of course is making this poet money. Lot's of money I would presume. I am totally surprised that a horde of angry students bearing pitch-forks and flaming logs have not paid a visit to her house. So, to conclude, Mrs. Duffy deserves to be locked up inside a bare room and have a tape recording of each of her poems read to her over and over again, so she can see the error of her ways. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR GIVING ME HOURS UPON HOURS OF HELL WHILE I STUDY YOUR STINKING PILE OF CRAP!

I'm thinking that I shouldn't write this in the exam tomorrow, so it's probably best I get it off my chest now.

Website of the day... [22 May 2005|03:47pm]

I just realised something, I haven't issued a website of the day for a while. Hmmm... let me see...

Click on the picture to take you to the game. If you thought you knew Google, then you're WRONG! This game is incredibly addictive, which isn't a great thing when you're in the middle of very important college exams.

I HATE EXAMS!

BUT I LOVE GOOGLE!

Update... finally... [21 May 2005|07:27pm]

I didn't forget about you, LJ. Honest. I just have lots of exams on at the moment which has made it difficult to find time to update.

I just thought I would pop in to talk about Guild-wars. One of the best MMPORPGs I have ever played, it is truely fantastic. It's taken all of the fiddly, unfair and annoying bits out of other games to leave a perfect, easy to pick up and fun to play online game. I bought it for £30 and there are no monthly subscriptions - so there's unlimited play. I think I have experienced one of the best moments in my history of playing RPGs on this game:

Initially the size of the map and the detail absolutely astonishes you. There are so many things to do, people to see and stuff to look at. You can spend literally hours or days or weeks wandering around and battling through quests. I was having a great time, but I finally decided I would move onto Chapter 2 and join the majority of GW's player base. This is where the shock came. It turns out that this huge map and extensive detail is simply miniscule compared to Chapter 2. It was only an introductory world! It's amazing, the map is about the size of a country and there are literally endless quests and missions to do with thousands of people looking for friends. I'm hooked... it's a breath-taking game.

Sounds cool? Pick up a copy and give me a buzz, I'll team up with you and go on an adventure. Fancy venturing into the breach of the northern wall to push back the waves of attacking Charr? I certainly do. See you later!

[ music | Halo 2 title screen music ]

Guess what? The new Halo 2 maps are out! Yeah! I got back from college early due to my half day and I immediately downloaded the two free ones. Man, are they sweet? They friggin' rule. Unfortunately I can't seen to get the paid ones at the moment, I think the flood of people connecting to the server must have fried the stream for some people. Oh, well. I'll keep trying. The free ones are by far something to be excited about, they are really good. Containment gets the lead slightly in my opinion - but Warlock is a hell of a lot better than I had imagined. Warlock allows 4 way CTF! Imagine that! I tried it, it is madness - but fun madness! Containment makes a fantastic Big team battle map, it is so well designed. It's like Coagulation by 100 times better! Wow, I'm so excited, you should see the Bungie forums, it's crawling with people cheering the new maps - and some people have found glitches ALREADY! Hehe, I'll update again when I get my hands on Turf and Sanctuary.

Later!

Halo 2 Maps! [23 Apr 2005|11:49am]
[ mood | excited ]
[ music | Mike Oldfield: Tubular Bells II ]

Hullo, feeling much better today. I'm not at work though as I'm totally drained of energy - so I'm here instead obsessively looking at the new Halo 2 maps to be released onto Xbox Live on monday. Monday! I can't wait, and if you have Halo 2 online then take a look at the new maps and you won't either... they, to put it lightly, look frickin' amazing!

The first two are free and will be Containment and Warlock. In my opinion these are the two lesser greats of the four. However, they still look fun. Warlock looks a little too dark and complicated to me, although it certainly is original and Bungie say rockets rule on it. Containment looks brilliant, it's a snowy landscape/base with a HUGE trench leading through the middle. It's a massive map so it looks like it will make fun big team battle senarios. The other two maps, Turf and Sanctuary, look simply breath taking. Sanctuary looks amazing, it's set in ancient ruins, and there are broken pillars, statues, rocks and stuff everywhere. It looks like it would make a great map for hide and seek. Turf has to be the most awaited map, and I can definately see why. URBAN WARFARE. That's right, it's a city-scape. A city-scape in Halo 2? Yes! And it looks so frickin' fun I just can't wait. Unfortunately Sanc. and Turf are not free and cost like 3 quid for the pack - man it's worth it though.

Take a look at Turf and Sanctuary!. Just click on game viewer, but you'll need to be signed in to see it.

Well, that's about it for now. I'll update later today methinks, as Dr. Who will be on and I'll need to report on it. Later!

Argh... [22 Apr 2005|05:23pm]

[ music | Led Zeppelin - Houses of Holy ]

Feel ill. Won't talk much. Head hurts, ow.

I was off sick again today, I actually am feeling pretty bad, but due to yesterday's events I wasn't allowed back in anyway. I must have missed so much work over this past week - I'm going to be busy next week catching up. Damnit, that's going to make my ARG project difficult.

On other related Alternate Reality Game news there was an uber event in PPC (Perplex City) where players who had originally signed up recieved an E-mail from Sente. It was a riddle, and apparently the first 333 people to solve it and submit their answer gets a mysterious package. I'm telling you, the ARG boards lit up. It pissed some of us off because it made visiting the boards a matter of crawling into a room packed full of people.

Well, that's about it, I've got to get up for 6 am for work in the morning, If I'm going that is. Catch you all later.

Oh, and the sponsored link today is: http://y.20q.net:8095/ It's a seriously clever piece of scripting, hours of fun.

Thanking a higher being for the gift of mumps. [21 Apr 2005|03:42pm]
[ mood | bored ]
[ music | Nothing at the moment. ]

Well, I'm going for my first real blog update...

Today was amusing and boring combined into one incredibly disasterous mix. I'm just getting over the mumps, I only had it midly thanks to the MMR jab I had when I was a baby - but it was nasty. I've missed like half a week of college work, so I think I actually fooled myself into thinking I was ok to go back in. Well, I got to college and was promptly sent home by a bunch of terrified secretaries who actually thought if they stood within a metre of me they would instantly catch mumps. So, without complaining and highly amused, I came home for ANOTHER day of boring laziness.

I've been lurking around IRC, Unfiction and ImmersionUnlimited (ARG related entities) for the most part of the day. I also ate some ice cream and watched snooker. I think the highlight of my day is going to be meeting up with my friends online and giving them a couple of bouts of Halo 2 tonight. I totally frickin rule at snipers at the moment. For my standards anyway.

Oh, on other notes... I HAVE to have a set of these! They look so cool, dice made out of bone, how cool is that?

Well, that went ok. I have a journal now!

Bloggy Time! [20 Apr 2005|09:48am]
[ mood | content ]
[ music | Guns and Roses: Sweet Child o' Mine ]

Well, it's about time I had a blog. I mean, I already have a blog, but it's devoted to news of a certain genre of games rather than my life. And considering how I prance around the web I thought I ought to make an effort to authenticate my personality by making a journal. A lot of my online friends have journals and blogs too, so I guess I'm jumping on the band wagon. I don't mind about doing that, it seems like a cool idea anyway.

So...

To know all about me go to my profile and read it, other than that bookmark this journal and check back regularly. I will try to update as often as possible - it helps me think when I write all about what's happening in my strange little world. Later!
